"When we honestly ask ourselves which people in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The ones who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing, those are the ones who care."

Henri Nouwen

What to expect when I phone

orange butterfly

We recognise that it can be very difficult to make this first call to us and we want to make it as easy and stress free for you as we can.

When you have decided that you wish to discuss the possibility of receiving counselling, then the first port of call is our office, which is open Monday – Friday, from 9am – 3.30pm.

The phone number is 01243 786349.

We know that on occasions the answering machine will be in use if we are taking another call, so please leave a message and we will ring you back as soon as we can.

Here's the things we'll ask you...

The first thing we will need to do is set up an Initial Assessment appointment for you with one of our Counsellors. As well as basic information about yourself, we will also need to ask you for contact details that you are happy for us to use. This is for your privacy, and to ensure confidentiality.

We will also ask you to tell us, very briefly, a little of what has happened to you, so that we can make sure that Lifecentre is the best place for you to be receiving counselling.

Some of the people who come to us have had, or are still having, contact with other professionals such as their local Mental Health teams or Drug and Alcohol services. It is very helpful if we know this as we may want to contact them before the Initial Assessment appointment to ensure that we are all working together for your safety and well being. We would only get in touch with them with your consent.

We will need to ask for the contact details of your Doctor's surgery at your Initial Assessment, so it is helpful if you can bring that along with you please. This is only for a back up if you were to need emergency medical care - we do not need to contact your doctor in normal circumstances.

And here's the things we can offer you...

We can offer counselling in whichever of our venues is closest to your home but sometimes for the first assessment we will ask you to come to Chichester. All our sites are easily accessible by car or public transport.

We may be able to book your first appointment with you while you are on the phone or we may have to call you back with a date. We aim to see you within 4 weeks of your referral, depending on the demand on our services at that time.

We appreciate that you may need to pluck up a lot of courage to phone us and that this may not be at all easy for you. Please be assured that we will be on the other end to support you. You don't need to go into any details that you don't want to and you can take all this at your own pace.

We look forward to meeting all our clients and the kettle is always on ready, for your arrival!

Counselling costs

As we are a small charity, we cannot offer free counselling. All counselling for those under 18yrs is at a reduced rate of £15 per session. There is no charge for the Initial Assessment. The full costs to us to provide one session of counselling is around £45. We ask you to pay as much of this as you are able. If you are struggling with money, we can offer a reduction on this recommended amount. Please just talk it through with us. We don't want anyone to feel they cannot access counselling due to not being able to afford it. The most important thing is to get you the help and support we believe you deserve.
